Distribution: northern temperate and arctic zone, up to 2500 m above sea level; calcareous rocks, scree, stony grassland, on limestone. 

Shrublet cespitose, evergreen. Stems decumbent, 2-10 cm tall, up to 50 cm long. Leaves leathery, adaxially glabrous and dark green, abaxially white lanate. Flower 1, atop the stem, 20-40 mm in diameter, white. Fruits with long white hairs, in big heads. Fl. V-VI.Â
